The causes of hormone drops

Under the hormonal impregnation of pregnancy, the hair is often more vigorous and more beautiful. Hair is boosted and grows faster than ever. However, this is not a universal truth, and some women experience severe hair loss during pregnancy. In any case, care should not be neglected! In fact, it is often after childbirth that the problems begin.

With childbirth there is a sudden drop in pregnancy hormones, namely estrogen and progesterone. In addition to the mood changes that this can cause, it is common for the hair to suffer the repercussions, too.

Why this hair loss after childbirth?

If we want to use technical terms, we can say that the hair cycle is completely disrupted by the hormonal disruption of pregnancy. Estrogens disrupt the cycle and stimulate the production of sebum and keratin. The proportion of hair in the anagen phase is higher than ever during pregnancy. After childbirth, estrogen levels suddenly drop and cause a significant increase in the proportion of hair in the telogen phase, which has the effect of causing significant hair loss.

It may take several weeks or months for hormones to return to normal levels. The hair cycle can therefore take just as long to return to normal. Usually, this return to normal occurs six months after giving birth, but for some, it can take up to a year.

Iron deficiency, another possibility

Yes, iron , more iron! An iron deficiency could be the cause of sudden hair loss in women after giving birth. The role of iron is very important during pregnancy, which is why it is monitored closely. During childbirth, it is not uncommon to lose blood and experience heavy periods. Some women may therefore have a lack or deficiency of iron.

Natural care more important than ever

Even if our hair is more beautiful during pregnancy, we must continue the usual care and pamper it. They will need it in the near future. We choose to do one natural shampoo per week (don't hesitate to take advantage of maternity leave to space out your shampoos !), and one treatment per week in order to maintain the strength and shine of the hair. You must of course select your products according to the nature of your hair. For dry hair , we opt for shea-based treatments. For oily hair, you will need gentle and soothing masks to calm the sebaceous glands. Gentle care will be best suited to normal hair. Finally, if you wish, you can even treat yourself to a short cut at the hairdresser, but be careful with the coloring!

And the colorings?

During pregnancy, certain precautions should be taken. Chemical colorings, for example, should be avoided, since they are at the heart of an intense debate in the scientific community (it's confusing, no pun intended). There may be links between chemical hair coloring and certain chronic diseases in adults. Likewise, during the first weeks of pregnancy the baby's organs are being formed, and it is best not to let products with questionable compositions disrupt this incredible phenomenon. Indeed, certain studies highlight the risk of tumors or malformations for the fetus if the mother uses traditional coloring... Choose a natural coloring (long live henna!) or wait until the birth for a quick visit to the hairdresser well-deserved !

Continue the care, multiply it if necessary

Don’t hesitate to combine the daily or weekly care you give to your hair with suitable food supplements (see you at the end of the article!). These will help provide your hair with the nutrients it needs. And you will give your locks a big boost! Although you cannot prevent hair loss linked to hormonal loss, you can, however, slow it down. To do this, you need to strengthen your hair in depth, with regular and correctly targeted care. Start from the eighth month of pregnancy to best anticipate the hormonal upheaval that is coming. Choose natural treatments rich in restorative components and antioxidants. They will nourish and restructure the hair fiber throughout pregnancy and postpartum.

Massage your scalp to care for your hair after pregnancy and while breastfeeding

Remember to massage your scalp regularly and as often as possible. This helps stimulate blood circulation and therefore blood flow to the hair. They will be able to capture a maximum of nutrients essential to their good health. Use the pads of your fingers and make circular movements while exerting light pressure on the skin. A few extra drops of vegetable oils won't be too much for this pleasant moment of intense nutrition. This little tip is great for taking care of your hair after pregnancy, including while breastfeeding!

Improve or reduce other influencing factors

Other factors come into play on the appearance of hair and body during and after pregnancy. Stress, sporting activity, diet, lifestyle, environment, genetics… It is possible to influence some of these factors, such as stress or diet. The objective here is to favor a healthy lifestyle, based on a balanced diet, appropriate sporting activity (particularly during pregnancy or postpartum) and on greater serenity on a daily basis. During pregnancy and after, it is not uncommon to feel tired. Don't be afraid to ask your loved ones for help with cleaning, shopping, taking care of the baby for a few hours... In principle, they won't bite you. Rest, and take care of yourself and your hair!

Be patient

Rest assured, even if you lose a lot (a lot, a lot) of hair after your pregnancy, everything will return to normal in the months following childbirth. Hair grows back normally: it is a completely reversible phenomenon. If hair continues to fall out excessively six months after the end of pregnancy, you may want to consult a dermatologist. But in many cases, getting everything in order and your care will be beneficial in the long run.

If a mother is breastfeeding, she continues to produce certain hormones, such as prolactin , which is responsible for lactation. Its secretion begins in the second month of pregnancy and continues beyond, as long as breastfeeding lasts.

Breastfeeding can therefore have an influence on hair and its health, the drop in hormones is very different. In the case of breastfeeding, the production of prolactin continues. High prolactin levels can cause significant hair loss in some cases, while they slow down the passage of hair into the telogen phase for others, which has the effect of slowing down hair loss and limiting it. . It is completely impossible to predict the influence of breastfeeding on every woman's hair. What we can say is that breastfeeding prolongs the period during which the hair is not as usual... And that care is, again, essential in all cases. More than beautifying your hair, they will allow you to recharge your batteries and take care of yourself for a few moments.
